Australian PGA Championship Shortened to 54 Holes Due to Heavy Brisbane Rainfall
The Australian PGA Championship has been reduced to 54 holes after heavy rainfall forced the complete abandonment of Friday's second round at Royal Queensland. No play was possible as continued downpours left the course unplayable, with standing water across fairways following approximately 250mm of rain in Brisbane over the past week.
Tournament director Jose Maria Zamora announced the second round will now take place on Saturday starting at 06:00 local time, with the final round on Sunday. A Monday finish wasn't possible due to next week's ISPS HANDA Australian Open logistics.
Local golfer Elvis Smylie maintains his one-shot lead after shooting an opening round 65 (-6). He sits ahead of a group at 5-under including Victor Perez, Joel Girrbach, Matias Sanchez and Cristobal Del Solar.
Major champions Jason Day and Cameron Smith are part of a strong Australian contingent just two shots back at 4-under, alongside Marc Leishman and others in a group of eight players tied for sixth place.
