Family friend Cathy Dowdy attempted to rescue the boy but struggled in the current. Another individual, Crane Cantrell, witnessed the emergency and successfully rescued both Dowdy and Harman's son. While the boy was safely returned to shore, Dowdy sustained serious injuries and has been in a coma for nearly six weeks.
"You know, I don't really know what I wanted to kind of say other than I wanted to use whatever platform I have to bring awareness to what Cathy did, what Crane did," Harman said. "They disregarded themselves, went into the water, saved my son and how do you thank people like that?"
Harman praised the bravery of both rescuers and emphasized the tremendous support received from the Glynn County and St. Simons community. A GoFundMe campaign for Dowdy has raised over $70,000 as of Tuesday.
The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of rip currents and the importance of water safety awareness. Those wanting to support Cathy Dowdy's recovery can contribute through the established GoFundMe page.
