Minjee Lee Hit with 2-Shot Penalty for Extra Club Training Aid in Tournament Bag
Two-time major winner Minjee Lee received a two-shot penalty during the third round of the Annika tournament after carrying an extra club that was being used as a training aid. The violation occurred on the 1st hole at Pelican Golf Club, where Lee had 15 clubs in her bag – one more than the maximum 14 permitted under Rule 4.1b.
Lee discovered the extra club before teeing off on the 2nd hole, avoiding additional penalties which could have totaled up to four shots. She went on to play three-under golf over her final 17 holes, finishing with a one-under 69, followed by a 70 on Sunday.

Similar incidents have occurred before, with PGA Tour pro Joel Dahmen recently receiving a penalty at the Shriners Children's Open for carrying an extra 4-iron during the first three holes. Dahmen explained that while he typically travels with 15-16 clubs depending on conditions, this was the first time he had accidentally left an extra club in his bag during play.
Extra club violations are governed by:
- Rule 4.1b (1): Defines club limits
- Rule 4.1b (4): Outlines penalties
This incident didn't significantly impact Lee's tournament performance, as she qualified for the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship among the top 60 players.
