Patrick Reed shot an incredible 59 in the third round of the Hong Kong Open, taking a three-shot lead in the International Series event. However, the round's official status is complicated due to preferred lies rules being in effect.

While the score stands for tournament purposes, it won't count as an official Asian Tour record because of the preferred lies provision. The current Asian Tour record of 59 belongs to John Catlin, who achieved it under normal playing conditions just six months ago.

Reed's round included:

  • Birdies on the first five holes
  • Birdies on the final four holes
  • A dramatic 15-foot putt on the 18th to secure the 59
  • A performance 9 shots better than the field average

The former Masters champion admitted to having "one of the worst warmups ever" before the historic round. Currently ranked 49th in the world, Reed hasn't won since the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour.

He now leads by three shots over Rashid Khan and Nitihorn Thippong heading into the final round at the 6,710-yard par-70 course.
